Oman- GCC U15 Golf Chionship: Asma al Rashdi claims maiden gold

The girls' golfing pair of Asma al Rashdi and Huwaida al Barwani did Oman proud when they clinched a silver medal in the three-team event at the third GCC U15 Golf Championship which concluded at the Royal Golf Club in Manama Bahrain on Thursday.

Asma topped her performance by also claiming a gold in the nett division her maiden title at a GCC event.

While the girls picked up two medals the boys failed to be on the podium. The boys were making their debut at the U15 championship.

Asma and Huwaida combined to collect a total of 645 (214 204 227) over three days in the gross category to claim the runner-up place.

The UAE trio of Rabab al Haj Reema al Heloo and Tara al Marzooqi emerged winner with a score of 559 (186 194 179). Bahrain finished third with the team of Habiba Mahir Yousif Riham Hisham and Mariyam Raeed al Ansari recording a score of 828 (274 269 285).

Playing with a handicap of 14 Asma was the winner in the individual nett division with a score of 276 (93 88 95). Asma said 'It's good to have finished at the top in the nett event. Hopefully I will get better with time and someday bring home a trophy in the gross category. Overall it's been a good outing.'

In the individual gross category Asma took the fourth position with scores of 107 102 and 109 for a total of 318. Huwaida carded 331 (107 106 118) to finish sixth.

UAE's Reema was the winner in the gross division with a score of 280 (93 100 87). Meanwhile Bahrain emerged champion in the boys' team gross event with the trio of Eid Muftah Faris al Qutami and Mohammad al Athim producing a combined score of 506.

Qatar's A Rahman al Dehaimi Ali al Mesafri and Ahmad al Mutawa scored 524 for silver. The Omani trio of Ayman al Balushi Mohammad al Balushi and Naseh al Barwani finished last in the five-team event with a combined score of 779 (413 413 374).

Bahrain's Eid with a score of 222 emerged champion in the boys' individual gross category. He was followed by Qatar's A Rahman with 262 who edged past his teammate Ahmad on countback. Coached by Milo Breitenwisher the Omani girls improved upon their performance from the previous edition.

At the last event the girls had claimed a bronze medal in a field of three teams. The Omani players were accompanied by Oman Golf Committee (OGC) chairman Mundhir al Barwani and OGC vice-chairman Ahmed al Jhdhamy.

Barwani said 'For Asma and Huwaida to finish second was the highlight of this competition for Oman. They are young they are learning fast and the experiences in these tournaments will help them improve quickly.' Jhdhamy who was the team manager said 'It's good to see that our players are getting good exposure. I have to thank our coach Milo for training and helping the girls' team perform so well.'
