ISIS Sending Fighters Amongst Refugees Warns German Spy Chief

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) The Islamic State (ISIS) “has undoubtedly sent militants into Germany as well as many other European nations” according to claims made on Friday by the head of the Germany's domestic intelligence agency the 'BfV.'

Hans-Georg Maassen the head of the BfV claimed that his organization had received over 100 tips regarding the presence of ISIS members among asylum seekersduring a discussion with the Interior Ministry according to Reuters.

In an interview with ZDF television Mr. Maassen said that BfV “has repeatedly seen that terrorists have slipped in camouflaged or disguised as refugees. This is a fact that the security agencies face at the present moment.”

“We are trying to recognize and identify whether there are still more ISIS fighters or terrorists that have slipped in” he added.

The claims come just a day after German authorities arrested a 35 year-old Algerian man living in a refugee shelter on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack. It was feared that the man who cannot be formally identified had received training with ISIS in Syria and wished to carry out Paris-style attacks in the country.

When asked Maassen did not confirm if Berlin was a known target for terrorist groups though he did say Thursday’s arrests were a sign that ISIS has sent radicals among refugees genuinely seeking asylum.

This news will inevitably make the lives of refugees more difficult in a climate of rising mistrust about their presence in Europe. Far-right political movements across the region have made significant gains in support since such incidents as the November Paris attacks and the Cologne assaults on New Year's Eve.
