Jawaher Al Qasimi launches Arab Women Sports

Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and the wife of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah opened the third Arab Women Sports Tournament on Tuesday evening at the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club.

The tournament the only one of its kind continues until February 12 and has the participation of 18 Arab countries and 58 clubs competing in eight sports including volleyball basketball table tennis archery fencing athletics shooting and show jumping.

The opening ceremony was attended by Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan Minister of Culture Youth and Community Development.

Prince Talal bin Badr bin Saud Bin Abdulaziz president of the Arab Sports Council and the UANOC; Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi head of AWST's Supreme Organizing Committee; Shaikh Eissa bin Rashed Al Khalifa first vice president of the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees; Shaikha Hayat bint Abdul Aziz Al Khalifah head of AWST's Follow-up Committee; Ahlam Al Maneaa president of the Qatari Women Council; Khalid Abdul Aziz Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports and Chairman of the Executive Bureau of the Arab Ministers of Youth and Sports Council and Rania Elwani the former Egyptian Olympic Swimmer also graced the occassion. The opening ceremony began with a grand entrance by the participating countries - Jordan Bahrain Tunisia Algeria Saudi Arabia Sudan Somalia Iraq Oman Palestine Qatar Kuwait Lebanon Libya Egypt Morocco Yemen and hosts the UAE.

Shaikha Jawaher welcomed the participating Arab delegations and expressed her happiness with the great assembly of Arabic women noting that the Arab Women Sports Tournament had become the premier event in the Arab world which supports women sports.
