Jordan- PM checks on progress of smart ID cards project

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman Feb. 4 (Petra) -- Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Thursday chaired a meeting for the smart ID project steering committee to discuss progress of work to issue high quality smart ID cards expected to be launched by the end of August this year.

The committee said it has completed 23 per cent of the project and reviewed the proposed design of the card which guarantees the security of information.

The project manager briefed the meeting on the information included on the cards and noted that some 5 million cards will be issued between May and August 2016 for citizens.

In November last year the Cabinet approved the procedures to move forward with the smart ID card project to be implemented in two stages in 2016.

The smart ID will contain basic information about citizens and can be used to replace the driving licence health insurance and social security cards.
