Kuwait- Germany pledges USD 2.6 bln in aid for Syria
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) LONDON Feb 4 (KUNA) -- Germany pledged 2.3 billion euros (USD 2.6 billion) in humanitarian aid for Syria through 2018 including 1.1 billion euros this year as the country leads Europe's response to a massive influx of Syrian refugees.German Chancellor Angela Merkel made this pledge on Thursday at the opening of Syria Donors Conference in London where the UN is trying to raise funding of USD 7.7 billion in support of Syria Refugee Plan (SRP) and Regional Refugee and Resilience Plan (3RP).She added that some 570 million euros will go to the World Food Programme noting that a 3 billion EU fund will help Turkey ease off some of the burden of hosting Syrian refugees. Since the beginning of the conflict Germany has spent over 1.3 billion euros (USD 1.4 billion) of humanitarian and development aid in the region making it the third-largest bilateral donor of humanitarian assistance for Syria.With these funds Germany is providing practical aid ranging from humanitarian aid to stabilizing conflict and post-conflict situations and reconstruction.Germany also hosted the first conference on the Syrian refugees situation in October 2014 in Berlin.
