Make youth aware of the serious plastic cancer threat

(MENAFNEditorial) Dubai, UAE, February 2nd, 2016: Dulsco, a regional pioneer in waste management services and human resource solutions stated that today's youth can be the champions of change if they are made aware of the challenges their generation will face due to plastic. As per the current estimates over 150 million tonnes of plastic waste is floating in the ocean today. If the trend continues, it is estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050. The company conducted a detailed workshop and presentation during the recent EcoWaste exhibition in Abu Dhabi to educate students from The Cambridge High School and International Community School.
The workshop focused on recycling initiatives in UAE, tips on recycling and a video on the 'Great Pacific Garbage Patch'. The students were also encouraged to create useful items with plastic waste bottles to drive home the 'Reduce- Reuse- Recycle' message.
S.Madhumohan, Director Waste Management, Dulsco stated that, "We strongly believe that youth of today should be made aware of the current situation that the world is facing and also the impact it will have on their future. The population worldwide is also growing at the same time, which also means that there will be a considerable amount of plastic waste that will get added to the planet each minute. We can't ignore it anymore, as the situation has become unmanageable and without conscious efforts put in by corporates, families and individuals this situation will only become worse."
As per reports plastic materials can remain in the sea for hundreds of years in their original form. Another grave challenge faced by the UAE is the desert campers who leave their trash which then ends up in a camel's stomach. These animals ingest plastic bags and ropes which then calcify in their stomach which makes it difficult to eat and they die of starvation.
"We therefore regularly design programs and workshops to educate the youth population in UAE at various forums. The idea is to make them the champions of this change and support them in taking the responsibility of taking care of the planet and also educate their own parents and families. We have found these platforms to be useful in communicating and interacting with the youth. The most important fact is to motivate them and ensure them that their efforts will not go waste. Government authorities across the country are focusing on engaging youth in the green journey and Dulsco is working with them closely in achieving this objective," added Madhumohan.
Dulsco created a unique stand to educate the youth about the various ways to recycle the products during the EcoWaste event. The stand at the show was constructed by re-using materials such as tyres, cans, bottles and bottle caps. The seats were made from tyres and the coffee tables were made by using compressed newspapers. The company also ran an engagement campaign 'Color a leaf, Grow a Plant' at the show. As part of this campaign, visitors were encouraged to color a leaf in the signature panel to show their support to sustainability – in return they were each gifted a plant. The students also created plant holders from old plastic water bottles. Dulsco also highlighted the 'Waste Reduction and Waste Diversion strategies for the region' at a seminar during the event. As a result of these initiatives, Dulsco won the 2nd prize for the most eco-friendly stand at the show.
Dulsco is the only waste management company and among very few HR solution providers in the region to be awarded the Superbrand status. It is a limited liability company and expanded its services to include all the Emirates and neighbouring Gulf countries. Dulsco was acknowledged as one of the 'Top Companies to Work For' in the recent times by the Great Places To Work For Institute, a global research and management consultancy.
