S. Korea's new high-speed railway system costs USD61.6b

(MENAFN) South Korea seeks to construct a third national railway system by 2025 that can link Seoul with most cities in just two hours, with the ultimate goal of upgrading current rail lines so they can accommodate high-speed trains.

The plan also aims at opening new railroads that can handle semi-high speed rolling stock, which can be used by trains with top speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, compared to more than 300 km/h for local bullet trains.

The 2016-2025 massive project, which will be finalized in the first half, is expected to cost USD61.61 billion and will eventually connect most midsize regional cities along the country's east coast within a couple of hours of the capital city.

Furthermore, the fourth largest economy's scheme calls for extending the Korea Train Express line from Gwangju to Mokpo, the country's southwestern region, and opening new bullet train services from Suwon, near Seoul.
