Oman to participate in Arab Women Sports Tournament

A seven-member team has been picked by the Oman Athletics Association (OAA) to take part in the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST) which began in Sharjah UAE on Tuesday.

The opening ceremony took place at the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club with athletics competitions starting on Wednesday.

The tournament concludes on February 12.

Mazoon al Alawi Hana al Qasmi Uhood al Mashari Khadija al Manji Moodi al Balushi Maha al Mushaifri and Hana al Tooqi will represent Oman at the event.

This is the first time that national athletics team will compete in the region's largest women-only tournament. Athletes from a total of 17 countries comprising Libya Yemen Bahrain Jordan Palestine Somalia Algeria Egypt Lebanon Qatar Iraq Tunis Morocco Sudan Kuwait Oman and hosts UAE are taking part.

While Mazoon Hana al Qasmi and Uhood will compete in the sprint races Khadija and Moodi will take part in long jump triple jump and heptathlon. Maha and Hana al Tooqi are taking part in shot put javelin discus and hammer throw events and the relay quartet comprises Mazoon Hana al Qasmi Uhood and Khadija.

The tournament is recognised by the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees (UANOC) and the Arab League and is organised by the Women Sports Department and Sharjah Ladies' Club (SLC) and their partners including the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare the National Olympic Committee and the Sharjah Sports Council.

The tournament was launched by the SLC in 2012 with the participation of only 12 countries.

The second edition was successfully organised in 2014. This edition features eight competitions - basketball volleyball table tennis fencing archery shooting and athletics with show jumping added for the first time this year. National coach Guzel Khubbieva of Ukraine and Said al Harthy the throwing events coach will accompany the team.
