UAE- Caign urges to surf Net safely

The 13th edition of the 'Safer Internet Day' events will be launched in the Capital on February 9. The event held under the theme "Let's Create a Better Internet Together" for the second consecutive year is organised in collaboration with more than 30 ministries federal and local authorities as well as private institutions.

The initiative focusses on how to protect yourself online and is held under the patronage of Lt.-General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior; and Major-General Dr Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi Secretary-General of the Office of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Higher Committee for the Khalifa Student Empowerment Programme.

At a Press conference on Monday Maj.-Gen. Dr Al Nuaimi said the initiative aims to find mechanisms to develop communication links and sustainable cooperation in line with the strategy of Khalifa Student Empowerment Programme that seeks to unify efforts targeting students.

47 events will be held across the country. The 'Safer Internet Day' poster will be displayed at several locations and the campaign's slogan will be added to Google search.

"Three short films and awareness bulletins will also be broadcast on different TV and radio channels" he said adding that the initiative will be launched across a number of shopping centres along with an extensive awareness competition via social media.

"More than 33000 students in approximately 300 schools have been trained; while more than 600 lectures have been organised for school students and more than 5000 teachers received training and awareness to protect the children from dangers of the Internet.

Marwan Ahmed Al Sawaleh Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education underlined the keenness of the country's leadership to extend this event for one full month in the UAE to provide intensive awareness tips about online risks.

He also stressed the ministry's commitment to carry out many activities and initiatives for the benefit of school students and to prepare curricula related to security and safety so as to enhance awareness and reach out to parents and Children's Service Centres.

Yumna Hamad Budwa Assistant Undersecretary for Higher Education and Scientific Research noted that the participation of higher education institutions in this event reflects an unrelenting keenness to educate university students about the objectives and messages involved in these events.
