Denver CO and Fargo ND – For those who want to learn an exciting new language—for diplomacy cultural studies friendship or simply the love of learning—Juanita de Guzman Gutierrez’s new primer Speak Tagalog is the first step. This easy-to-follow guide has been published by Outskirts Press.

Tagalog is the primary language of a quarter of the population of the Philippines and a second language for the majority. Tagalog is easy to learn especially with the simple guidelines laid out in Speak Tagalog A Basic Primer—a compendium of daily conversational Tagalog important cultural traditions and translations of words arranged according to the Philippine alphabet.

This primer covers the basics of conversational Tagalog—from the alphabet to the history behind the language. Learn how native speakers pronounce each word what to say and when to say it. On day one readers will learn “Maganda ka” (You’re beautiful!) “Guapo ka” (You’re handsome!) “Salamat po” (Thank you very much!) and “Walang anuman” (You’re welcome!)—phrases that will endear readers to native Tagalog speakers.

Prayer is a key ingredient in the Tagalog language as 93 percent of Filipinos are Catholic and so is the tradition of honoring one’s elders. This type of cultural detail is reflected in Speak Tagalog which includes the Holy Rosary prayers as well as pictures of holy sites.

Author Juanita de Guzman Gutierrez says “This book would make a valuable addition to high schools universities and consular offices—for those seeking to further diplomatic relations continue their adult education or even for children of Philippine mixed marriages who want to study their mother tongue. It’s good to be a linguist!”
