Jordan- UN Youth Forum discusses sustainable development goals


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) New York Feb.2 (Petra) -- Some 800 young leaders gathered in New York late Monday for the annual United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum. The new initiative aims to tackle youth unemployment making it clear that success in fighting poverty and inequality will largely depend on them being a driving force.

This year's Forum focuses on the role of young people in implementing communicating and realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which aims for global changes through 17 goals (SDGs) within the next 15 years.

Speaking at the 5th forum held under the theme "Youth Taking Action to Implement the 2030 Agenda" UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said "Young people around the world were crucial in shaping the 2030 Agenda." Young people helped build a transformative integrated and interrelated agenda. I call it a '21st century Declaration of Interdependence'" said Eliasson.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are centered universal inclusive and inter-dependent he said. "They can determine your future and set the path to a world where balance and equity can be found and where no one is to be left behind.

This is a historic step forward to recognizing the role and potential of young people in the world today for peace and security. It may play the same role for young people and the world as the legendary Security Council resolution 1325 has played for women over the years" he underlined.

UN Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth Ahmad Alhendawi told UN radio that the forum will discuss ways in which young people can play an active role in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

The two-day event will feature brainstorming town-hall sessions interactive panels and discussions with Member States providing youth representatives with an opportunity to voice their opinion share ideas and think together about specific issues of relevance to youth in the context of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
