UN condemns attack on Sayeda Zeinab shrine in Damascus
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) New York Feb.2 (Petra) -- Members of the UN Security Council late Monday condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Sayeda Zeinab in the southern suburbs of Damascus Syria on 31 January.
The attack was carried out by the terror group of Daesh that resulted in more than 60 dead and over 100 injured. In a statement issued late Monday members of the UN body expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the people of the Syrian Arab Republic. They also wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The statement reaffirmed grave concern that Daesh including foreign terrorist fighters who have joined the group in Syria groups that have pledged allegiance to the gang Al-Nusra Front and all other individuals groups and entities associated with Daesh or Al-Qaida continue operating in Syria.
It strongly condemned the negative impact of their presence violent extremist ideology and actions on the stability of Syria neighboring countries and the region as well the devastating humanitarian impact on the civilian populations.
They stressed that all member states shall fully comply with their obligations under the UN resolution 2178 (2014).
UNSC members reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security adding that it cannot and should not be associated with any religion nationality or civilization.
The statement underlined the need to bring perpetrators organizers financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice stressing that those responsible for these terrorist attacks should be held accountable.
