Doha: A new irrigation system has been accredited by the Department of Public Parks at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment after being tested for over 15 months. It uses half the water traditional irrigation systems consume.

The implementation of the system took 15 months — from September 2014 to December 2015 — the Ministry said in a press release yesterday.

While saving 50 percent of water the new system helps in keeping the plants healthy and green while ensuring good level of growth said the press statement.

This new irrigation system is set to be proposed as the standard one for all government bodies that rely on irrigation. The department also pointed out that the standardisation and specifications related to construction will be amended namely Chapter 28 regarding public parks.

Following the success of this project the Department of Public Parks is planning to conduct experiments on current water consumption patterns by enriching soil texture and improving its properties in addition to linking the irrigation system to the weather station.

The ministry emphasised that a technical team is currently developing the scientific method of experiment to be implemented soon.

The pilot project tested the quantity of water used in the new public realm guidelines and then the quantity specified by the technical committee of the public parks for (park) irrigation showed differences in the consumption levels by 50 percent.

The technical team has developed a daily monitoring system for follow-up of the plants including different types of trees flowers and other fauna to see their response to the quantity of water used. The team documented that through the Central Irrigation System.

The result was positive and accordingly the department has accredited the system so that it can be used in the government’s greenery and beautification projects.

The ministry said this outcome will help expand green areas and plantations and will have a positive impact on the environment and combat desertification.

The technical committee has recommended new designs for the irrigation networks and to increase the size of the current main water pipes by more than 0.75pc to assure the possibility of pumping more water in case of emergency especially during hot summer months.
