Qatar- Career Fair opens at HBKU Student Centre

DOHA: Students from Education City campuses are meeting more than 100 potential employers from six sectors at a unique career fair to explore career paths as they determine how best to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained during their study.

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) of Qatar Foundation (QF) is hosting the second joint two-day Education City Career Fair at the HBKU Student Centre.

The fair offers students and alumni from universities across Education City an opportunity to meet representatives of local regional and international companies and organisations.

The sectors represented include finance media oil and gas technology education and research with several employers inviting students to take part in on site interviews and company sessions.

The fair was officially inaugurated yesterday by Maryam Hamad Al Mannai Vice-President Student Affairs HBKU and Adam Al Saadi Director the HBKU Career Development Centre.

The event is organised in collaboration with Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar Texas A&M University at Qatar Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar Northwestern University in Qatar HEC Paris in Qatar and UCL Qatar.

“HBKU and the other universities within Education City continue to graduate ambitious innovative and hard-working students. By helping facilitate conversations with potential employers at the fair HBKU hopes to help its students find career opportunities where they can put into practice what they learn at the university and thrive” said Al Mannai.

Alham Al Hajaji Head Education City Career Fair committee said “The main idea of the fair is to bring the universities together.

“Last year was a huge success as more than 1000 students and their alumni attended. We had almost 93 companies at the fair. This year we have 100 companies and nine universities at the fair along with six sectors.”

On career path interest of Qatari youth at the fair Al Hajaji said “Earlier many females were interested in business studies and males in engineering but now things have changed everyone is doing different things.”

More than 600 students and alumni attended the fair yesterday and similar numbers are expected today. Attendees are able to gather information about available internships and permanent positions at a wide range of government entities non-profit organisations and private sector companies.

Asma Al Mohannadi a member of CMU-Q Class of 2015 said “ It is an excellent opportunity for senior students and graduates to match their skills to the market and it is also helpful for students who may be looking to pursue internships.”

Bashayer Al Mohammed a computer engineering student at HBKU said “I’m not sure what I want to do after I graduate but I think after visiting this fair I’ll have a clearer idea about my future.” The fair is Sponsored by Qatar Shell.
