Experts renew calls for Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman Feb.1 (Petra) -- Arab Experts renewed calls to activate standards to ensure nuclear security to make the Middle East a zone free of weapons of mass destruction through the accession and ratification of the international legal instruments.

On the sideline of the Jordan -Canada regional workshop on nuclear security held in Amman experts stressed the importance of adopting robust measures to ensure the safety of nuclear and radiological materials.

The workshop which was organized by Jordan Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs and the Canadian government was held under the theme" Towards Universal Adherence of International Legal Instruments for Nuclear Security".

The two-day meeting gathered representatives of 12 Arab nuclear experts during which they discussed the need for creating awareness on nuclear security matters as well as the accession and ratification of many international legal instruments.

The workshop which was held at the Dead Sea aimed at adopting practical measures to build capacities structures and technical capabilities in the Middle East through continuous training.

In an interview with Petra Head of UN file of Disarmament in the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Omar Awadallah stressed the need for Israel to accede to Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) as it is the only country that possess nuclear weapon which poses a great danger to the whole region.

Head of the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission Bilal Nsouli urged the international community to launch a dialogue to make the region a zone free of weapons of mass destruction reiterating serious concerns about Israel's nuclear capabilities.

He stressed the need to force Israel accede to the NPT and to place its nuclear facilities under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspection as mandated by UN Security Council Resolution 487.

Chief Commissioner of the Energy and Mining Regulatory Commission in Jordan Farouk Hiyari said that that the Kingdom pays great importance to nuclear security matters and considers it a key element in international efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Jordan affirmed the need to restrict use of nuclear energy in peaceful applications and purposes for the benefit of countries and peoples around the world.

Ambassador at the Foreign Ministry Suleiman Arabiyat said that nuclear security gained high level attention in the Kingdom through the active participation of His Majesty King Abdullah II in the "Nuclear summit in 2010" launched by US President Barak Obama. Jordan has also established a new Jordanian National Team to counter smuggling of nuclear materials.

The Kingdom he added has ratified the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism and has recently signed the Jordan- US Joint Action Plan on Combating Smuggling of Nuclear and Radioactive Materials.

His Majesty has also presented a Jordanian initiative under the theme " Statement of Activity and Cooperation on Countering Nuclear Smuggling" in Seoul and the Hague Nuclear Security Summits in 2012 and 2014 respectively Arabiyat further explained.
