South Korea to set new security guidelines for int'l passenger ships
(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) South Korea intends to introduce new security measures to prevent maritime accidents with international passenger ships providing services to Japan Russia and China the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said Monday.
According to the ministry 29 ships at 22 routes connecting South Korea with the three countries will be checked in accordance with the new rules.
"The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to concentrate its efforts on preventing huge [ship-related] accidents… strengthen the accountability of ferry operators… " the ministerial statement read.
Such issues as boat's stability excessive cargo or number of passengers age of vessels fire protection and schedule control will receive special attention the ministry said.
According to Yonhap news agency Seoul has decided to enhance security measures following the sinking of the Sewol ferry which left over 300 people dead in April 2014.
