Qatar Shell backs THIMUN Qatar Model United Nations for 12th year

Doha: The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) Qatar began last week at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) with more than 1700 students from 87 nationalities.

The three-day conference aimed to promote the development of leadership skills among high school students through discussion debates and negotiations that address real world problems and global issues.

Qatar Shell has been the sole sponsor of THIMUN in Qatar for 12 consecutive years.

Mohammed AbuJbara Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Manager Qatar Shell delivered the keynote speech at the opening ceremony and said: “Qatar Shell is proud to have supported this programme for 12 years since it started as Qatar MUN Programme and then became The Hague International Model United Nations Programme five years ago.

“THIMUN touches the human and social pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030 we support through its focus on education teamwork and leadership.

“The key objectives of THIMUN are aligned with Qatar Shell’s CSR strategy as we are committed to supporting and delivering sustainable contributions that positively impact Qatar’s society. A vital part of our CSR strategy includes collaboration with key local partners to reinforce Qatari talent and capabilities” he added.

Qatar Shell’s CSR programmes support Qatar’s development in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. In addition to the development and training of around 300 Qatari staff Qatar Shell contributes to national talent development more broadly — through the Enterprise Challenge Qatar; TAFAWOQ the Project Management Centre of Excellence; and KOORA TIME a five-year sustainable initiative in partnership with Qatar Football Association to improve the health and wellbeing of youth through football.

“THIMUN Qatar is unique with high school students running it for their peers” said Lisa Martin Head THIMUN Qatar. “It allows students to discuss challenging international issues but perhaps more importantly by allowing students to organise the event it is an important opportunity for students to practice real-world leadership skills on an international scale. I am proud of their contributions to civil and informed discourse and ability to host such a tremendous event.”

Schools from all GCC countries were represented in addition to new participants from Indonesia South Africa Sri Lanka Spain and Taiwan. Students participated in committees including Disarmament Human Rights and Environment and the General Assembly. THIMUN Qatar also hosts a special committee and advisory panel that focuses on issues in the host region providing opportunity for youth to collaborate on current global issues. The aim is to give students from diverse countries and backgrounds opportunity to practise tolerance peaceful collaboration and problem resolution to address challenges facing the world through debate dialogue and collaboration.
