January Deadliest Month for Refugees

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) In January 230 refugees died on their way to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that 55528 migrants and refugees crossed the Mediterranean to enter Europe during the first 28 days of 2016. The same organization recorded 244 deaths at sea for the same period. This is almost three times the number of refugees who died in January 2015.

According to IOM a survey of migrants and refugees revealed that 90 percent of those refugees were from Syria Iraq or Afghanistan.

For the first 28 days of this year an estimated number of 55528 migrants and refugees crossed the Mediterranean to enter Europe.

The refugee crisis becomes increasingly deadly. Aljazeera reported on January 22 that 'at least 45 people including 17 children [] died after their boats sank near two Greek islands.'

On day after this tragedy Angela Merkel emphasized the need for a joint effort among European countries to solve this problem.
