Fifteen amateur explorers are currently exploring the UAE desert the old-fashioned way. They set off on their journey on January 22 off Emirates Road and will end their 10-day camel trek on February 1 at the Global Village in Dubai.

The group composed of explorers of different nationalities camped in Al Faqa'a Al Ain last week where they shared their experiences with the media. What they enjoyed the most was the tranquility of the desert they said. They also have a better understanding of the traditional Bedouin life and have come to appreciate it.

The trek schedule > Journey starts at 7am

> Lunch break at 12pm

> Group covers 50km before camping for the night

Their daily journey starts around seven in the morning. They take a break at 12pm for a light lunch before resuming their trek. Every day they cover a distance of around 50km before camping for the night.

"It was very difficult in the first few days of the trek" said Indian national Rasheenah Ahmed. "But afterwards we got the hang of it. Our endurance and patience were tested - sometimes we travelled very slow but when we galloped with the camel I can't fully describe how it felt."

The mother of two added: "The view of the desert is different ... when you're in the middle of it. You see miles and miles of sand dunes and the terrain is different - from sunrise to sunset and how the colour of the sand changes it was simply amazing."

For French national Charlotte Sarrazin (pictured below) getting a better understanding of Emirati culture and heritage was the best lesson of the journey.

Sarrazin also shared her experience with the camels. She said: "They have different personalities. When you ride them they listen to your voice. You should never be aggressive with them. In the desert they know exactly what they are doing. There is a reason why they take this or that way - they always take the easiest route so you have to trust them."

The expedition is organised by the Hamdan bin Mohammed Heritage Centre (HHC) with renowned explorers Ahmed Al Qassimi and Mohammed bin Taryam.

Bin Taryam said: "This year's camel trek has been very nice and a lot of fun. There's a great level of cooperation between all of the participants and they really seem to be enjoying the experience.

"The trekkers have also refused to take the easy route so - for instance - if they get tired on the camel there's the option of getting into a nearby car but they've all steadfastly refused to do so thus far."
