Kuwait- De Mistura: Talks with Syrian Gov't delegation constructive


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENEVA Jan 29 (KUNA) -- UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura on Friday said he held talks with a delegation representing the Syrian Government describing these discussions as constructive.Speaking at a news conference following the meeting de Mistura predicted a new round conciliation talks between the Syrian government and the opposition would be held early next week noting that he had "reasons to believe" that the opposition delegation would arrive in Geneva on Sunday for the talks.De Mistura who has been involved in intensive diplomacy to pave way for the new round of settlement talks between the Syrian parties said he had explained to the opposition leaders that holding the talks would clear the decks for delivering humanitarian aid to people stranded in besieged regions in Syria.Regarding the talks' proposed agenda he indicated that it is largely based on relevant UN resolutions some stipulating formation of an interim government drafting a new constitution and holding elections under international auspices.The Riyadh-based opposition has raised serious issues related to human rights he indicated noting that there are non-negotiable issues such as release of prisoners.As to the government delegation they brought up the issue of terrorism de Mistura said however the envoy noted that he explained that this file falls within the UN Security Council jurisdictions.The new round of talks involving the opposition and the government are expected to begin on Monday.
