Morocco- ONCF to Reinforce Tangier Casablanca Marrakech Railway

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) The African Development Bank (AfDB) approved on Wednesday a USD 112M loan to the Moroccan national railway operator (ONCF) to build a second track on the Settat-Marrakech section.

For the AfDB and its partners that loan is a new step to address the growing demand of transport from both passengers and freight on the Tangier-Casablanca-Marrakech railway the bank said in a press release.

The funds will be used to double the railway that connects the city of Settat to that of Marrakech. The doubling of this 142km stretch will save time and allow increased passenger and freight traffic between Casablanca the economic capital of the kingdom and Marrakech the main tourist center.

The annual volume of passengers could thus go from 4.5 million now to over 7.4 million in 2020 the year for completion of the work. As for cargo volume it could more than double.

Over 8 million Moroccans live in the project area the bank added noting that improving the efficiency of rail transport logistics contribute to competitiveness and poverty reduction in these territories.
