Al Attiyah leads star cast at Qatar International Rally

DOHA: Two-time Dakar Rally champion Nasser bin Saleh Al Attiyah will lead the pack of over a dozen of top drivers at the Qatar International Rally set to start on February 4 this was confirmed by Qatar Motor and Motorcycling Federation (QMMF) yesterday.

Clerk of Course Marwan Musabeh (pictured) informed that the total number of participants for this year’s extravaganza has been exceeded to 15 with drivers from Sweden and Italy set to give a renewed flavour to the prestigious event.

Besides Qatar drivers from Kuwait Lebanon Jordan and Turkey will showcase their skills and will attempt to challenge Al Attiyah’s dominance on home soil.

“Preparations for the event have been completed and we are ready to host this eagerly-awaited event” said Musabeh while hoping to stage the event in a befitting manner.

“The event is considered as one of the most important events in QMMF agenda headed by Nasser Bin Khalifa Al Attiyah and we will give our best for its success” he added.

While speaking about the nature and geography Musabeh said that all arrangements have been finalised as planned and agreed especially the fields related to the drawing of the amended stages. The rally divided into a total of 13 stages including the link stages with a total distance of 535.24km will see diversity in the path Musabeh added.

The rally will start with the Super Special Stage with the kick off set in front of the QMMF headquarter.

The second day will consist of 3 stages with the drivers covering a total distance of 227.86km including the 124.13km stages.

The first stage of the day will be called Al Kharsaah while the second stage will be known as Al Shabana. The third stage has been named as Umm Wishah.

Stages will be repeated on the final day on February 6 with drivers slated to dive for 257.38km including the 117.58km link stages. The final day also includes the longest stage of 25.90km and is being named as the QMMF stage.

After completing the stage all the participants will return to the QMMF headquarter in Doha for the prize giving ceremony and press conference.

The Qatar International Rally is an international rally racing event held on the outskirts of Doha.

The rally which initiated in the 1970s and has long been one of the cornerstone events of the Middle East Rally Championship and is one of two events (along with Dubai International Rally) to have been held every year of the MERC.
