Syrian regime forces seize 75 percent of Turkmen region


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Backed by Russian warplanes since September 2015 Syrian regime forces have taken control of 75 percent of the Turkmen-majority region of Bayirbucak.

Regime forces are now in control of the Nibh al-Mur area (Acisu) and Burj al-Zahiyah thehighest peak in the region (Kizildag) located five kilometers from Turkey.

They also nowcontrol a number of villages including Ghamam Zweik and Burj al-Qasab.

Turkmen areas in northwest Syria have been victims of a major offensive from Russian-backed Syrian government forces since mid-November.

Thousands of Turkmen a Turkic ethnic group largely based in Syria and Iraq have been displaced by the fighting around Bayirbucak.
