Timimoun .. Red Algerian oasis beguiles visitors

ALGIERS Jan 27 (KUNA) -- The Algerian town of Timimoun has long beguiled visitors with its crimson oases where some 10000 tourists converge on the town every year drawn to its sandy landscape and historic castles.
Shaped as a geographical triangle the major tourist attraction contains numerous unorthodox castles erected on sand and red mud.
Called "The Red Oasis" due to the oases galore and abundance of palmy forests the town's main oases are Tinerkouk Okarout Sherwin and Kharora all of which are dotted with red castles dating back to the 13th century.
Named after a benevolent man named Mimoun who is said to have hailed from Morocco and had inhabited the town Timimoun is famous for its rich folklore.
The folklore comprises vast Algerian desert civilization which has been classified by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2005 as amongst the wonders of human civilization. (end) mjz.nam
