Kyrgyzstan ranks 2nd poorest in Central Asia over 2015


A third of the country's population lives below the poverty line, and the level of poverty is only forecasted to grow furthermore will throughout the current year, based on recent reports.

In spite the backing of top Western lenders, including the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, Kyrgyzstan has had economic difficulties following independence.

Initially, these were direct result of the breakup of the Soviet trading bloc, which it was part of, and resulting loss of markets, which impeded the republic's transition to a demand economy.

However, the government is committed to the transition to a market economy as it has worked hard to reduce expenditures, ended most price subsidies and introduced a value-added tax.
