Lebanon, EU launch dialogue to fight terrorism


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BEIRUT Jan 26 (KUNA) -- Lebanon and the European Union launched on Tuesday bilateral dialogue aimed at boosting cooperation against terrorism the official National News Agency said.The dialogue is aimed at "activating cooperation between the two sides for combating terrorism in shadow of common hazards due to terrorist acts" the NNA said alluding to the first session at this level and adding that the two sides agreed on "activating cooperation" for combating violent extremism and measures concerning border checkpoints air aviation safety and checking terrorism funding.The session hosted by the Lebanese Foreign Ministry was presided by Sherbel Wehbe in charge of the ministry political and consular affairs and Pedro Sereano the EU deputy secretary general for the external action apparatus. Other officials from the two sides took part in the session.The EU has supported regional countries in action and words against terrorist and radical groups.Local authorities regularly declare busting "terrorist cells" or elements linked to the notorious group the so-called Islamic State (IS). The Europeans namely the Britons have assisted the Lebanese establish sensitive monitoring equipment along the borders to help in curbing gunmen's infiltration. (end) wsm.rk
