(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Head lice has reportedly been spreading among students in schools in several Moroccan cities.
According to the Moroccan daily newspaper Assabah families received verbal and written warnings from school teachers and administrative staff urging them to check their children's heads on a daily basis. The same source said that the issue which has been present in schools for the past three years has been met with a blind eye by the ministry of education and the ministry of health. The daily newspaper added that both ministers have done nothing to prevent the spread of lice. According to the same source students with head lice have been reported in schools in Sidi Kacem Marrakech Casablanca Nador Agadir Berrechid and other Moroccan cities. Assabah points out that mothers are particularly sensitive to this crisis as they consider its presence in their children’s hair as a sign of their negligence in keeping their children clean. A pharmacy assistant in Casablanca told the daily newspaper that several people are ordering drugs lotions and shampoos that treat head lice and nits (lice eggs). Head lice has reportedly been eradicated in the late 80's in Morocco after nearly all families have begun to have access to hygienic facilities and cleaning products. Head lice is still a big issue worldwide including Canada and the U.K. A hot debate is now taking place in Canada on whether to allow students with head lice to attend classes or wether they should be bared until they are lice and nit-free. The small wingless insects live and feed on scalps by simultaneously sucking blood and injecting saliva. Females can produce five to six eggs a day for 30 days. Each lice has a shell that sticks to the hair shaft.
