UNSC establishes mission to monitor ceasefire in Colombia


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK Jan 25 (KUNA) -- The UN Security Council (UNSC) unanimously decided on Monday to establish a political mission to participate for 12 months in the international component of a tripartite mechanism to monitor and verify the ceasefire and cessation of hostilities in Colombia.The Security Council led by Uruguay adopted resolution 2261 acknowledging the joint request made the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia- People's Army (FARC-EP) in a Joint Communique.The Mission will be a political mission of unarmed international observers responsible for the monitoring and verification of the laying down of arms and a part of the tripartite mechanism that will monitor and verify the definitive bilateral ceasefire and cessation of hostilities and consistent with the Joint Communique.The mission will begin all monitoring and verification activities following the signing of the Final Peace Agreement between the Government of Colombia and the FARC-EP.During the meeting the Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Angela Holguin thanked the members of the Council for unanimously adopting the resolution affirming that this decision demonstrates the Council's commitment to the pacific settlement of disputes.She said that "this concrete mandate of the Security Council will benefit all Colombians" and will contribute to build confidence in a country determined to overcome the aftermath of a decades-long conflict that caused too much suffering for generations.
