DOHA: The Traffic Department plans to organise a stunt driving championship to use it as a platform to raise awareness about traffic safety.

Through this innovative competition the department seeks to address motorists exercising dare-devil-driving as a hobby at the designated sites by introducing some safety rules. Rules and regulations will be made to organise stunt-driving as a sport including exit entry and parking areas at the site. Surprise elements like presenting victims of road accidents will be used to deliver impressive traffic safety messages.

The championship will be part of a year-long traffic safety campaign being launched by the Traffic Department in collaboration with Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF).

The drive entitled “Tahmal Bi-omrak” (Be responsible for your life) aims to create awareness about traffic safety among all segments of the community especially the young motorists.

“I wish the drive would achieve its goal and help reduce major road accidents especially those involving young motorists aged 18 to 25 years” said Brigadier Mohamed Saad Al Kharji Director-General of the Traffic Department during the launch of the campaign at the Traffic Department headquarters.

“Traffic awareness is very important since it is directly related to our life. It is a collective responsibility of all organizations and institutions and the community in general not only the Traffic Department” he added.

The drive will address different segments of the society in three languages- Arabic English and Urdu said Ayed Dabsan Al Qahtani General Manager and Chairman of the Board of Trustees RAF.

Social media will also be used in a big way to spread traffic awareness messages. A working team of specialists will be set up to post messages and catchy photographs of road accidents on social networking sites said Ammar Mohammad an social media expert.

“We will reach out to everyone from children to adults with data on people killed in road accidents because of their fault or the mistakes of others” said Mohamamd.

The driver will also focus on schools and some students will be chosen as traffic safety ambassadors.

Bikers and vintage cars will also be used to deliver traffic safety messages to the public.
