Cold weather kills 85 in Taiwan


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO Jan 25 (KUNA) -- At least 85 people were killed in Taiwan since Saturday as temperatures fell to the lowest levels in more than 40 years the Taipei-based Central News Agency reported on Monday. Among them at least 35 deaths were reported in Taoyuan City northern Taiwan most of which were probably due to hypothermia or cardiac diseases caused by the sudden drop in temperature the authorities said.Meanwhile 31 deaths had been also reported in Taipei and New Taipei in northern Taiwan. The mercury in Taipei stood at four degrees on Sunday a 44-year low for the city. Record-low temperatures and abundant moisture across Taiwan have caused snow to fall in urban Taipei and mountainous parts of Taiwan. Paramedics suggested that people especially senior citizens should keep warm and not venture out into the cold.(end) mk.ag
