Qatar Presents Unique Model in Preserving and Protecting Environment


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) HE the Minister of Environment Ahmed bin Amer Al Humaidi said Qatar has provided a unique model in preserving and protecting the environment, thanks to the directives of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

HE the Minister added that Qatar developed environmental systems, laws and action plans that included many projects and programs aimed at the protection and conservation of natural resources and the fight against all types of pollution, as well as at environmental protection and safety of the community.

In an editorial for the first issue of the quarterly "Environment" magazine published by the ministry, His Excellency said that the Ministry of Environment is sparing no effort to present an ideal environment vision that is in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, pointing out that the ministry's main mission is to protect and develop the Qatari environment as well as promote capacity building, awareness and partnership with community to ensure environmental sustainability.

He called for continued efforts and work to maintain the achievements made by the ministry for the sake of environmental protection and preservation in order to achieve sustainable development pursued by Qatar.

Editor in chief of the magazine Ahmed Hussein Al Mutawa said during the last two decades the world has witnessed a major change in the concept of environmental protection, considering that as the most important issues accorded further attention by the developed and developing countries.

He added that most developed and developing countries, including the State of Qatar, have committed themselves to a range of systems and mechanisms related to environmental protection and the preservation of natural resources as well as the safety of the community, in accordance with what was approved by many Arab, Gulf, regional and international conferences including the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and the Johannesburg Summit in 2002.

Al Mutawa described the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) held recently in Paris, as the biggest climate summit in the history of climate negotiations.

He pointed out that the participation of the State of Qatar and the presence of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani in the opening session of the COP21 reflected the significant role played by Qatar along with the international community in the protection of the planet, adding that Qatar is an active member in the international organizations and one of the countries which received respect and appreciation for its constructive efforts in solving various problems by peaceful and political means.
