Qatar- Katara to host Prophet's Poet Festival in April


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti and General Supervisor of Katara Award for the Prophet’s Poet Khaled Abdul Rahim Al Sayed at the press conference yesterday.

DOHA: Cultural Village Foundation-Katara is organising the Prophet’s Poet Festival from April 10 to 14 which will witness the presentation of the ‘Katara Award for the Prophet’s Poets’ to the winners. Since its launch last June the award saw huge response from across the Arab world and beyond with 828 poems submitted prior to the deadline. Most participants hailed from Iraq and the wider Levant region with 250 poems while 236 entries came from Egypt and Sudan.

The remaining North African Arab states submitted 184 poems 145 came from the GCC and Yemen and 13 from non-Arab states. Of the submissions 60 were contributed by women.

Judging will be carried out by two independent panels of juries comprising professors academics and specialists in the Arabic language and poetry Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti told a press conference yesterday.

The first panel will come up with a shortlist of the best 30 poems. The final jury will choose the five poets for awards during the festival.

The award carries a total prize of $675000. The top winner will receive $300000; and the second to fifth $200000 $100000 $50000 and $25000 respectively.

Katara will publish an anthology of the winning poems.

With the theme ‘Poetry’s Beauty Blossoms When Describing the Best of Mankind’ the five-day festival will also have opening and closing ceremonies seminars lectures and exhibitions.

Events lined up for the festival include the opening ceremony on April 10 seminars among 30 poets and prize distribution on April 14; ‘Complementing the Messenger Exhibition’ by poets across all ages Islamic Exhibition Arab Calligraphy Lessons about the love of Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) for five days after Maghrib prayers and the Human Prophet lectures for three days after Asr prayers.

A section of the festival titled ‘Towards the Love of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH)’ will include competitions and activities to be participated by institutes and centres from Qatar and abroad.
