UAE- Review: Lincoln Navigator

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)

Traditionally the preserve of American Football players and New Jersey 'business people' the Lincoln Navigator was once a somewhat niche buy around its entry into the market in the late '90s. Now with reports including those conducted by Global Industry Analysts suggesting that by 2020 SUVs will make up a third of all new car purchases it finds itself bang in the mainstream competing with models from all marques.

Being one of the first luxury models on sale though results in the accumulation of 20 years of good will which is a fine weapon to possess. Mention the Navigator and many car buyers will immediately jump to 'affordable opulence' as a term to describe it. That and 'pretty large.'

What the Navigator may lack in subtlety it has always made up for in size. Like the state in which it is constructed Kentucky its motto should read - 'big and proud.' The 2015 model is no different with its ample box-like back end. Although at the front it's all change. A newly designed front grille brings the car more up to date in keeping with price equivalents like the new Cadillac Escalade.

Under the bonnet sits Lincoln's 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine which is said to deliver more power than any of the previous incarnations' motors. Having driven the 2010 model this stands up to scrutiny. Put your foot down in the 2015 version and that heavy frame is not so much of an issue as before getting up to speed in a much better time. Although in the corners the inevitable body roll is still a bit of an issue if you find yourself taking them at pace. which you shouldn't anyway.

Given the engine's technology the Navigator is also said to provide Environmental Protection Agency- estimated best-in-class fuel economy with 22 miles to the gallon during highway driving.

Inside is exactly what you'd expect from a Navigator: acres of leather-bound interior wood veneer and big old levers displays and cup holders. This is perhaps not the most refined SUV more Wild West than West End but it does provide an enormously comfortable environment to spend the many hours you will find yourself passing in the UAE's traffic. Not only that but part of the reason for such high SUV sales is the accompanying feeling of safety and security you get when behind the wheel. The Navigator has that in spades.
