Qatar- OIC condemns attacks on Saudi missions in Tehran and Mashhad


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Foreign Minister H E Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah attends an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the Saudi city of Jeddah yesterday.

DOHA: An extraordinary meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah yesterday condemned attacks on Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic missions in Iran earlier this month.

In a statement OIC said it “condemns the aggressions against the missions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Tehran and Mashhad” Such “aggressions” contravened international law and the OIC Charter which member state Iran rejected the statement said news agencies reported.

It also denounced “Iran’s interference in the internal affairs of the states in the region and other member states (including Bahrain Yemen and Syria and Somalia) and its continued support for terrorism”.

Foreign Minister H E Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah led the Qatari delegation to the meeting attended by representatives of 37 member states.

Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al Hamad Al Sabah also Chairman of the meeting reiterated support for Saudi measures to combat terrorism in all forms and manifestations. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmad Al Jubeir told the meeting that attacks on Saudi missions came within the framework of the aggressive policies of the government of Iran and its continued interference in the internal affairs of the countries in the region.

He said Iran seeks to spread sedition unrest and chaos and incite sectarian strife in the region.

“This attack was part of ongoing attacks on the diplomatic missions in Iran for 35 years. Tehran government did no exert any efforts to stop this tampering against the sanctity of diplomatic missions. Iran only issued some condemnatory statements while the host government’s responsibility is to take actions” Saudi Press Agency SPA quoted Al Jubeir as saying.

He said the attacks on Saudi missions in Iran were condemned by countries of the world and regional and international organisations including the UN Security Council the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Arab League.

He Al Jubeir urged OIC to take a strict stance emanating from the principles of its Charter and principles of international conventions and laws.
