Record 58.3 million tourists visited NY in 2015

(MENAFN- AFP) A record 58.3 million tourists visited New York in 2015, up 1.8 million on the previous year, and registering a 14 percent increase in Chinese visitors, officials said Thursday.

It is the sixth year running that America's financial and entertainment capital has registered an increase in tourists.

"As the safest and most exciting big city in America, we have so many rich offerings that continue to make the five boroughs a global draw," said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Around 46 million tourists came from elsewhere in the United States and 12.3 million from overseas, said NYC and Company, the city's official marketing and tourism organization.

Britain, Canada, Brazil and China send the most foreign visitors, in that order.

Attractions that opened in the city last year include the new Whitney Museum of American Art, which moved downtown, and the One World Observatory offering stunning views from the top of the One World Trade Center.
