(MENAFN- Morocco World News) A number of textbooks publishers that participated in the 'One Million Bags' Campaign sued Morocco's Head of Government Abdelilah Benkiran and his Minister of National Education and Vocational Training Rachid Belmokhtar.
According to the Arabic daily Al-Akhbar the publishers took part in the campaign (started by the Royal initiative) with the goal of supplying Moroccan students nation-wide with textbooks. However the publishers did not receive their payments from the Ministry of Education for the past two academic years. After numerous attempts by the textbook publishers to highlight their issue they resorted to take their case to court. They had previously organized a number of meetings press conferences and protests but were met by minimal response from the government. The Moroccan Association for Publishing Houses urged the government to quickly interfere to prevent the bankruptcy of the publishers in question and to secure the supply of textbooks for the next academic year. The Association also announced its unconditional support for the publishers and denounced the lateness of their payments. In the case that their problem persists the publishers threaten to protest in the streets of capital. The same source reveals that the concerned Ministry declared that the publishers received previous installments and that there are other pending installments that the central department in Rabat will settle. The Ministry added that the issue is the same at the national level and that other partners of the government are still waiting for their payments as well.
