Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych Reach 3rd Round of Australian Open


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) World number three Roger Federer beat Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 7-5, 6-1 to reach the third round at the Australian Open on Wednesday.

Four-time Australian Open champion Federer, chasing his 18th major singles title, defeated the 35th-ranked Dolgopolov in one hour and 33 minutes.

Federer will now have a third-round encounter with Bulgarian 27th seed Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Argentina's Marco Trungelliti 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Sixth seed Tomas Berdych also progressed to the third round courtesy of a 6-4, 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Mirza Basic, while Japanese Kei Nishikori came out on top of an awkward match with his practice partner Austin Krajicek.
The seventh seed advanced but not before a second-set struggle, winning 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 in one hour, 53 minutes today. Nishikori will next play either Spain's 26th seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez or German qualifier Daniel Brands.
