Muscat Festival is not just a treat for your eyes and ears but for your taste buds too.

Not to be missed is a sugarcane juice stall at Naseem Gardens. Run by Fathi Mohammed from Egypt the stall has struck a sweet note with visitors.

A small glass of sugarcane juice costs 500bz and large one is for 700bz. Mohammed who is participating in the festival for the first time uses a machine imported from Egypt to extract the juice. 'I used to sell sugarcane juice in Egypt too before moving to Oman.'

Known for a host of health benefits sugarcane juice is Egypt's national drink he says. "Sugarcane juice has a lot of health benefits. It cleanses the liver is a blood-purifier and can even help cure anaemia because of its iron-rich properties. It is very popular in Egypt. It is Egypt's national drink. You will find a sugarcane juice shop in every street in Egypt.'

However the best time to have this wonder drink is before breakfast said Mohammed. In Oman sugarcane is cultivated in Salalah says Mohammed as he gets on with extracting a glass of fresh juice. The whole process takes just about ten seconds before the juice is served. As Mohammed hands you the drink he says 'One should drink sugarcane juice within half an hour of its extraction as its colour turns brown from oxidation if you keep it for too long.'

One cane makes around a cup of sugarcane juice says Mohammed. For those wishing to add zing to the drink Mohammed squeezes a lemon into it. 'Some people like mixing lemon juice in their sugarcane drink as it allows you to have more.' Apart from juice sugarcane is also used to make white and brown sugar and black honey. It's also used as animal feed. Pulp from the crushed cane is used to make wood and paper.
