Book on ROHM traces conception and rise of the iconic structure

H E Dr Rawiyah bint Saud al Busaidiyah Minister of Higher Education and chairperson of the Board of Directors of Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) recently launched a book on this iconic structure.

The launch was held at the main reception porch of ROHM in the presence of a number of state officials. H E Dr Rawiyah said that the book documents each stage of ROHM from idea design construction to decor. It also talks about the global art performances equipment used on stage its technology and the most prominent facilities of the house.

She wished that the book will promote the sultanate and ROHM in particular when it is presented to delegations visiting the sultanate. H E Dr Rawiyah added that the book will be a reference point for any researcher or educator who wants to explore the artistic and cultural aspects of the opera house. The title summarises the role played by the book in the process of the establishment of this major cultural and civilisational icon in the prosperous era of the sultanate under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

The launch was also part of the 45th National Day celebrations. Through this book H E Zubair presents a powerful visual description of the landmark. Researched and written in consultation with music opera architectural and design experts from the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) and ROHM the book was written over two and a half years. Designed in collaboration with a leading German design company and printed in Verona Italy the 320-page volume is available in big and small sizes.

The book opens with a brief history of Oman followed by a description of Muscat as the setting for ROHM. It then takes the reader to a scene inside the Royal Opera House Muscat on October 12 2011 when His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said cut the ribbon to inaugurate the building and marked the beginning of an auspicious new era in the cultural life of the sultanate. The book traces the period when ROHM was first envisioned at the dawn of the new millennium in the year 2000 to the present day.

As the fascinating story of ROHM unfolds the reader gains an understanding of how Oman's traditional architecture influenced the contemporary character of the opera complex and the timeless principles that underline the elegance and beauty of its palatial artistry. The book also has a pictorial account of a range of performances hosted by ROHM over the past four years.

From operas ballets dances concerts and stage shows performed by artistes from across the world the book showcases the quality of the programmes hosted. In addition the book gives an insight into the state-of-the art opera theatre through images and quotes of people who built and operate the mechanisms.

The book comes to a close with an inspirational note on the reflections future promises that ROHM holds for visitors and Omanis not only in terms of cultural entertainment and educational enrichment but also in terms of career opportunities in performing arts and related occupations.
