Financial humanitarian aid gap rising- UN chief


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) DUBAI Jan 18 -- Despite the generosity of donor countries the gap of financial humanitarian assistance is on the rise UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon stressed late Sunday.Ki-moon made this remark at an official launch of a report on humanitarian aid financing at International Humanitarian City in Dubai.The one-day event which highlighted the role of UAE in taking up international humanitarian causes was opened by UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon and was under the sponsorship of Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.Ki-moon pointed out "The gap between the increasing numbers of people in need of assistance and sufficient resources to provide relief is rising. The world today spends close to USD 25 billion annually to provide part of the required assistance to save lives and the people in need. Despite the generosity of many donors there still remains a gap in the financing of humanitarian aid estimated at USD 15 billion." Sheikh Mohammad Al Maktoum lauded the UN decision to launch the report in UAE as it has topped the list of donor countries. He stressed that joint international action is essential in narrowing humanitarian financing gap worldwide."To bridge the gap in humanitarian aid it is necessary to consolidate international efforts improve efficiency of humanitarian work involve the private sector and establish good governance in the countries that need help" said Sheikh Mohammad Al Maktoum said.Meanwhile Chairperson of International Humanitarian City Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain wife of Sheikh Mohammad Al Maktoum said with the number of refugees and asylum seekers and internally displaced people in the world touching nearly 50 million.There are 125 million people around the world who are affected by lack of basic needs such as food clean water resources health and education she added.The event was attended by Amiri Diwan Advisor and UN Secretary General's Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs Dr. Abdullah Al-Matouq General Consul of the Consulate General of State of Kuwait Dubai and the Northern Emirates Thiab Al-Rashid and consul's advisor Anas Marafi.
