Qatar Look to Continue Winning Streak Against Syria


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) -An upbeat Qatari team will hope to continue its winning streak against Syria here Monday in the AFC U-23 Football Championship and enhance its prospects of qualifying as one of the top three teams for the 2016 Rio Olympics men's football tournament in Brazil.

Qatar leads Group A with six points after defeating Iran(2-1) and China (3-1). Iran and China have three points with one win each while China is yet to register its first win.

Ahmed Alaa and captain Abdelkareem Hassan excelled for the hosts last Friday by scoring two goals for the winners. Qatar coach Felix Sanchez expressed his delight at the manner in which his boys raised their performances. "It was nice to see the players fight on the pitch," he said after the win against Iran. "To bag six points from two games gives us confidence." "This is an important win. We want to reach the quarterfinals and I am hopeful we are on right track," said captain Hassan who scored twice in Qatar's 3-1 win on Tuesday against China.

"We will play to win against Syria. The coach has given us a plan. We have been playing strong. We are waiting to play the next clash," he said.

AFC has named Oman's Al Kaf Ahmed Abu Bakar Said as the referee for Qatar-Syria match. Al Amri Abu Bakar Salim Mahad (OMA) and Nawaf Shaheen Khalifa Theyab Moosa (Bahrain) will assist Bakar Said while UAE's Mohmmed Abdulla Hassan Mohammed will be the fourth official.
Australia take on Vietnam here Sunday evening in a Group D encounter.
