Western Powers Announce Lifting Sanctions on Iran


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Vienna January 17 (QNA) - The European Union and the United States announced lifting the sanctions imposed on Iran shortly after the UN nuclear watchdog confirmed that Tehran was in full compliance with last July nuclear agreement.
Mogherini said this is a historic day that signals the ability of diplomatic effort could lead to fair solutions and ensure the international security and stability.
She affirmed that the international community lifted all economic sanctions imposed on Iran in relation with the latter's nuclear program.
EU chief diplomat Federica Mogherini and US Secretary of State John Kerry made the announcements in Vienna after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that Iran had kept its side of last year's agreement with six major powers by significantly scaling down its nuclear programme.
"I hereby confirm that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has verified that Iran has fully implemented its required commitments as specified in Sections 15.1-15.11 of Annex V of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)" Kerry told reporters Saturday night.
The US sanctions-related commitments described in Sections 17.1-17.5 of Annex V of the JCPOA are now in effect he affirmed.
He was commenting on the statement made by the IAEA Director-General Yukiya Amano that the Agency's nuclear inspectors verified Iran met its obligations under the JCPOA.
In his statement to the IAEA Board of Governors Amano noted that today was a historic day in the relations between the Islamic Republic and the UN nuclear watchdog and the international community at large.
On his part Iranian Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif welcomed the lifting of the sanctions and renewed his country's commitment to all provisions of the JCPOA and to cooperation with the IAEA.
Following the release of a report confirming that Iran has completed necessary preparatory steps to start the implementation of a plan of action aiming to resolve the nuclear issue UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the achievement of having reached "Implementation Day" highlighting that he is heartened by the lifting of sanctions on Iran.
"This is a significant milestone that reflects the good faith effort by all parties to fulfil their agreed commitments" said Ban in a statement issued by his Spokesperson.
The report was submitted to the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors and to the United Nations Security Council after Agency inspectors on the ground verified that Iran has carried out all measures required under what is known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between the E3+3 and Iran.
In July Iran and a group of six countries – China France Germany Russia United Kingdom and United States – reached the JCPOA entrusting the IAEA with verifying and monitoring Iran's commitments. (QNA)
