US lauds Oman's humanitarian gesture by receiving Guantanamo detainees

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) (With POL-OMAN-US-GITMO) WASHINGTON Jan 14 (KUNA) -- The US lauded the Government of Oman for its humanitarian gesture and willingness to support ongoing efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility by receiving 10 detainees.The US Department of Defense said in a statement Thursday that it coordinated with the Omani Government to ensure these transfers took place consistent with appropriate security and humane treatment measures.Oman announced earlier today that it had accepted and received 10 Yemeni nationals from the Guantanamo facility as a temporary measure.Today 93 detainees remain at Guantanamo detention facility located in Cuba.
