Canada marks arrival of 10000 Syrian refugees


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON Jan 13 (KUNA) -- More than 10000 Syrian refugees have now arrived in Canada two weeks after the original deadline of December 31 2015 the government announced Wednesday.That number is expected to hit 25000 by February 29 the Minister of Immigration Refugees and Citizenship John McCallum said followed by another 10000 people before the year is up."Many people have worked day and night to bring these refugees to Canada - and Canadians have opened their communities and their hearts to welcome them. Canada continues to set an international example with its response to the worst refugee crisis of our time" he affirmed in a statement.More than 100 communities across the country have welcomed or are preparing to welcome Syrian refugees the government noted.Canadian customs' agents and other personnel remain stationed in Lebanon Jordan and Turkey where they continue to process applications from families recommended by the United Nations.Almost half of the 10121 refugees that have landed in Canada since November 4 are privately sponsored by individuals cultural groups or religious organizations - a process that is not permitted in the United States.
