RAF to deliver humanitarian aid to besieged Syrian town of Madaya

DOHA: Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) in collaboration with UN World Food Programme (WFP) is all set to deliver humanitarian aid to besieged Syrian town of Madaya. A consignment of basic food items is expected to reach today.

The consignment is part of a total of 335 tonnes of food and non-food items prepared to dispatch to the hard-to-reach town by WFP.

Some 250 tonnes of the aid is foodstuffs and the remaining are medicines medical equipment and cleaning material. They are enough to support 40000 people for a month.

The town is located west of Damascus and near the Lebanese border. It has been under siege reportedly by forces owing allegiance to the Syrian government since July.

RAF has earmarked QR1m to send basic food items and medicines to stranded people in Madaya said Ayed bin Dabsan Al Qahtani General Manager and Chairman of Board of Trustees RAF. RAF’s drive to collect donations to support the people of Madaya received a good response from citizens and expatriates in Qatar.

Some consignments of food and non-food items under WFP entered Madaya on Monday said Abdullah Al Wardat Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) for GCC.

The remaining consignments are expected to reach in few days. The foodstuff includes flour rice edible oil salt sugar beans lintels and canned foods.

Some four million people are benefiting from WFP aid inside Syria said Al Wardat.
