Doha: Qatar hosted regional consultations for the Asian and Pacific zone on the draft declaration on the right of peoples and individuals to international solidarity organised by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The Foreign Ministry’s Human Rights Department Director Sheikh Khalid bin Jassim Al Thani led Qatar’s delegation in the presence of Faisal bin Abdulla Al Henzab Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva. Representatives of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights took part along with counterparts from Asian countries including Saudi Arabia Malaysia India the Philippines Iraq Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Addressing the opening session Sheikh Khalid stressed that hosting consultations stems from Qatar’s firm conviction of its wise leadership of the importance of international solidarity to promote and protect the rights of individuals and peoples.

He said growing challenges facing states and societies such as environmental implications of climate change spread of violence extremism and terrorism increasing extent of armed conflicts and spread of poverty and unemployment require more attention to the issue of international solidarity.

He stressed that overcoming challenges and obstacles often goes beyond the individual capacities of countries and prevents them from fulfilling their obligations which requires partnerships and regional and international cooperation that allow the exchange of experiences and good practices transfer of technology and easing the disparity between developing and developed countries so that no one is left behind in the development march.

He said Qatar has adopted over the past four decades a foreign policy based on the promotion of international cooperation with all countries and international and regional organisations to achieve world peace and contribute to efforts to achieve development on all fronts including offering help to developing countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

This policy he added has strengthened through Qatar National Vision 2030 which calls for promoting the country’s role internationally and regionally at the economic political and cultural levels and contributing to international peace and security.

Sheikh Khalid hoped that the outcomes of consultations will help enhance international efforts in general and those of independent experts in human rights and international solidarity in particular by submitting recommendations that achieve ambitions and keep pace with current developments.
