17th Asian Men's Championship: Handball team seeks berth in 2017 worlds

The national handball team faces a tough challenge as it bids to seek a berth from the four spots available at the forthcoming 17th Asian Men's Championship which will be held in Bahrain from January 15-28.

The team coached by Egypt's Bassim El Sobky returned to Muscat on Monday after a camp in Egypt and will depart for Bahrain following a final training session at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Wednesday.

Speaking to Muscat Daily ahead of the team's departure Sheikh Sultan al Hosni the Oman Handball Association's (OHA) chairman said 'We have had a good build-up for the Asian championship. The boys are in good shape and we are looking forward to a good display. 'Our group is tough it comprises Qatar South Korea Syria and Japan. But we have a chance to finish among the top four in the 11-team tournament. It is not going to be easy but the boys are ready for the challenge.'

As part of the build-up Oman featured in an international tournament in Egypt where it played against the hosts and the South Korean and Bahraini national teams. Oman beat Bahrain 31-21 and then drew with South Korea 26-26 before losing to the hosts.

Prior to the Egypt event the national team took part in another international tournament in UAE where it finished runnerup. Five spots are reserved for Asian teams at next year's World Cup in France.

With Qatar having already qualified the Bahrain event will finalise the remaining four places.

Qatar qualified after finishing second in the last World Cup in Doha.

Asian championship: Group A: Qatar South Korea Oman Japan Syria; Group B: Iran UAE Saudi Arabia China Lebanon Bahrain. Oman's fixtures: Jan 16 (vs Qatar) Jan 18 (vs South Korea) Jan 20 (vs Syria) Jan 22 (vs Japan).
