(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) By Nasser Al-Khamri KUWAIT Jan 13 (KUNA) -- Kuwait plays a leading role in aiding the Syrian refugees Head of the UN refugee agency office in Kuwait Dr. Hanan Hamdan said here Wednesday.Speaking to KUNA Dr. Hamdan said that Kuwait's hosting of three donors' conferences for the Syrian refugees reflected the country's strong conviction in helping these people adding that Kuwait also played an integral role in garnering international attention to the upcoming conference to be held in London next February.In 2015 Kuwait helped some 2.4 million Syrian refugees with its generous nearly USD 120 million donation to the UN agency she said.Displaced Syrians and refugees in nearby countries to Syria also benefited from Kuwait's donations said Dr. Hamdan noting that in 2013 Kuwait had given a donation of about USD 110 million to countries hosting Syrian refugees which included Jordan Lebanon Turkey and Egypt.She went on saying that Kuwait's donations to the UN agencies had surpassed USD 1.3 billion with the UN Refugee Agency gaining the most out of this sum of donations.Kuwait's leadership and people played an important role in rallying the international community into the cause of aiding the Syrian refugees said the official noting that the UN naming of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as the "Humanitarian Leader" and honoring Kuwait as a the global "Humanitarian Center" were befitting titles.Regarding the challenges facing aid work for Syrians Dr. Hamdan said that providing adequate protection measures during humanitarian missions within Syria was the biggest obstacles facing the UN refugee agency.She added that the any instance when the agency faced a budget deficit was another issue to consider stressing that nations should abide by their pledges to able to help the refugees.The agency has a budget of USD seven million which will hopefully cover the expenses for now said Dr. Hamdan.She said that the agency also played part in resettling the refugees if all other measures failed indicating that usually refugees were sent to Scandinavian countries the US or Canada for resettlement.The resettlement process goes through various phases in cooperation with the host countries mostly responsible for the security background check of refugees said the official who affirmed that the agency made it paramount that the refugees it's hosting would not become a security liability for the agency or any other countries willing to accommodate them.
