'Enriching' experience for WISE programme participants


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The participants in the Learners' Voice Programme of the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) for the year 2015-16 shared their experience yesterday during an interaction after the completion of their first residential session held at the Qatar National Convention Centre.
As many as 32 young learners from 29 countries including three Qataris, are part of the year-long programme that started with the WISE summit in November 2015.Dina Pasic, programme manager of the session said that the participants were able to get a peek into a wide range of topics and share their experiences during the session.
She said: "The participants were provided several modules during the programme which covered a number of areas such as communication, leadership as well as educational innovation and many more. The participants had a fantastic session and they will continue the programme with more sessions later this year."
Muzabel Welongo, a Congolese exile in Kenya since 2010, said that the programme has been an exceptionally enriching one for him. "As a refugee in Kenya, I had undergone several issues and this programme made me learn more about the need for education and how to face tough situations. As a refugee, I had to move out of my country to Tanzania and later to Kenya and this particular programme has been exceptionally important for me."
Several other participants such as Vinicius Santos, facilitator, Social Collaboration and Innovation Laboratory, Brazil, Alisha Fredriksson, a student from Canada/Sweden, Eman al-Kuwari, a Qatari graduate from the Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar and at present employed as a technology researcher at ictQATAR and Hassan Salatt, who graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar and employed with Qatar Airways also shared their experience of the programme.
This was the first residential programme for the 2015-16 Learners Voice programme participants. The session was designed to impart a foundational understanding of key concepts and evolving trends in education, as well as knowledge of pressing global education challenges. The second residential session of the programme will be held in June in Madrid.
Specialists from the Yale World Fellows Programme held a series of dynamic workshops in leadership and communication skills during the session. The focus on education, leadership and communication is designed to support the participants as they research and develop a variety of innovative projects throughout the year-long programme.
The 2015-16 learners were chosen from over 1,300 applications submitted from around the world. The Learners' Voice Programme was established in 2010 as an initiative of WISE with the intention of engaging the perspectives and creative energies of young people in debates around important education issues and challenges.
This year's learners, aged 18-25 will benefit from the expertise of the WISE team and global education specialists. The programme is supported by its partners, Banco Santander through its Universities Global Division.
