(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Hosts Qatar take on China in their opening AFC U-23 Championship match on Tuesday at Lekhwiya Stadium with eyes firmly on winning an Olympic Games berth.
The top three sides at the 16-team event will reach the football competition at the Rio Olympic Games. The Doha event will be played from January 12 to 30.
Qatar have twice reached the Olympic Games competition previously €once at the Los Angeles edition in 1984 and then the Barcelona edition in 1992. Syria and Iran are the two other sides in Group A.
Tuesday's clash against China will test the character of the home squad which has been under training for the last six months. The core of the group also appeared at the FIFA U-20 World Cup held in New Zealand last year in June.
Coached by Felix Sanchez, Qatar have promising players like Akram Afiff, Abdelkarim Hassan and 2014 AFC Young Player of the Year Ahmad Moein.
